Feel at home in Gorton and
New East Manchester
Gorton provides a rich and varied community life, with the town
home to local independent retailers, civic services such as the local
library and a regular market complete with indoor hall and outdoor
stalls. It is home to the only two high schools in east Manchester, as
well as a large number of primary schools and the Wright Robinson
Sports College. What’s more, the sporting and recreational facilities
of the City of Manchester stadium are close at hand.
Gorton is a richly Victorian area, boasting fne
architecture and parks. The jewel of the town
is the Monastery of St Francis, a 19th Century
Church which has recently reopened after a £6.5m
restoration project to turn it into a stunning live
events venue and conference centre. Gorton
Reservoir in Debdale Park on Hyde Road is
another fne Victorian feature.
Today Gorton provides a focus for leisure, with
sailing, windsurfng and canoeing as well as
relaxing walks. Debdale Park itself provides
sporting facilities including tennis, netball and
basketball courts, a skateboarding ramp and
football pitches.
Other local leisure facilities include Crowcroft
Park, The Gorton Gymnastic Centre and The
Manchester Climbing Centre which offers a wide
range of climbing events and walls to challenge
both the beginner and more experienced. There’s
also the famous Belle Vue greyhound track,
which houses a multiplex cinema and bowling
centre. The recently refurbished Belle Vue leisure
centre has two large sports halls, cricket lanes,
two hockey pitches and a running track.
From a sporting view you will superbly served by
over 130 parks, as well as ultra modern amenities
such as Sportcity in east Manchester, originally
constructed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games
and now enjoyed by the public, and including
the City of Manchester Stadium, the Velodrome,
and England’s National Squash Centre.
